This is a five page copy of transcripts from a Bill of Complaint filed by the family of John Nicholas Emerick against the family of John Jacob Astor. Astor and Emerick, through a written agreement, entered into a partnership on 20 June, 1787. The pages copied from the original complaint, pages 21 and 22, cover the time period of 1787 up to 1928. The entire complaint centers around a leather chest that belonged to John Nicholas Emerick. The trunk was supposed to house documents that proved through the partnership of Astor and Emerick there was a 90 year trust set up. Both men were very prominent figures in the fur trade of the early 1800's. Through multiple failed investigations executed by various agents hired by the Emerick family, the course of the investigation went from 1815 all the way until 1928. Eventually missing documents proved through the partnership and trust a sum of $30 million dollars was amassed. These documents were found in the leather chest in question from the beginning of the complaint. I'm not certain when this copy was made as it is not dated. But it is written in old ink in cursive writing. Eventually the matter was settled in court in January of 1930 when the Emerick's lost their case. This is an pretty interesting hand written article concerning the partnership of two of the most powerful men in the early fur trading years of the United States.
