This book was written by Earl J. Coates and Dean S. Thomas, published in 1990, the narrative is 84 pages and is illustrated with black and white photos. This small booklet, almost like a pamphlet, is packed with interesting and useful information for the Civil War weapons collector. It is especially useful to those just getting started in the hobby. It contains information on 50 Union and Confederate used rifles, muskets, carbines and revolvers. Simple drawings break down the weapons by part to familiarize the beginning collector. The weapons are divided into six categories; muskets, rifle muskets, rifles, breechloading rifles, carbines and revolvers. The characteristics and specifications of the weapons are listed, along with a photograph of the weapon, the ammunition it used and a Civil War period image of a soldier holding that weapon if available. Alos covered are the tools required to keep the weapons operational at the soldiers level, bayonets and a step by step method of loading and firing an infantry musket and a revolver are illustrated. This is a very useful book for the reference library, and at a price that everyone can afford! This paper back book is in good condition.
