This is a German 2nd Type E Boat Badge awarded during World War II. The badge was first instituted on 30 May, 1941 and was designed by Wilhelm Ernst Peekhaus of Berlin. The award was authorized for officers, NCO's and enlisted men who served on board E Boats. The award criteria was to have participated in a minimum of twelve enemy actions, when the mission was particularly successful and the individual displayed leadership or was killed in action, special circumstances of being wounded in action or being a survivor of a ship sunk from enemy action and to have performed a heroic action for which no other decoration was presented. This badge is made of zinc and retains nearly none of the original silver wash, but most of the gilt finish. It is comprised of an oval wreath with a Kriegsmarine eagle at the top clutching a canted swastika in it's talons. An updated E Boat slices through the waves, with the bow of the boat extending past the left side of the wreath and the smallest rolling wave on the right side. The front of the badge presents a clean and well detailed appearance. The back of the badge is also clean. It has a banjo type pin that rotates on a crimped hinge. A flat catch retains the pin in the closed position. There is a round wire hook at the top of the badge to attach to the tunic. The badge is back marked FEC.W.E.PEEKHAUS BERLIN/AUSF.SCHWERIN BERLIN 68. This will make a fine addition to your WWII German collection.
