This is an excavated shoulder scale segment from Hanover County, Virginia near the Cold Harbor battlefield. The scales were introduced into the military in 1851 and were worn by mounted troops only. In 1855 they became regulation for all branches of service. There were three configurations, one for Privates, one for NCO's and another style for staff NCO's. This segment of a shoulder scale is the crescent shaped end, the actual scales are missing and is for a Private. The brass crescent shows a beautiful even chocolate patina and still retains a small piece of the iron strap on the bottom. The Battle of Cold Harbor took place from 31 May through 12 June, 1864, as one of the final battles of Lieutenant General Grant's Overland Campaign. Cold Harbor proved to be a costly battle, with just over 18,000 combined casualties. I do not know the exact location of this find, but it isn't hard to imagine some Union Private advancing into the strong Confederate positions, never to return home. This would make a great starter piece for your beginning collector.
