This is a Verwundetenabzeichen, or Wound Badge, in silver that was issued to German military personnel who were wounded in action during World War II. On 1 September, 1939, the wound badge was accepted into the German military awards system, Like almost all other German awards, the wound badge could be awarded in three different classes, bronze, silver and gold. The Wound Badge in silver was awarded to personnel who had been wounded by hostile action three or four times, or for being frostbitten in the line of duty. It is made of a die struck zinc alloy oval shaped base, with a laurel leaf wreath around the edge, encircling an M35 helmet with a canted swastika imposed in the center of the helmet. The helmet rests on tow crossed swords that in turn are on top of a pebbled field. Almost all of the silver wash is gone from the face of the badge, with just traces showing in the recessed areas. The reverse of the badge has a cast hinge and catch for the tombak wire pin. A raised number 65 is clearly visible on the back to represent the maker of E.F. Wiedmann of Frankfurt A. M. This Wound Badge in silver will make a great addition to any WWII German medals collection.
