This is a non excavated Eagle General Service button from the Civil War period. This two piece button is smaller than a coat size button and larger than a cuff or kepi button. I'm not 100 percent sure, but I believe it is a vest button. The back mark is from Waterbury and reads WATERBURY BUTTON CO. followed by two small stars. The face is dent free, no mars or blemishes. The eagle is facing to the right, clutching an laurel branch in the right talon and three arrows in the left talon. In the center of the eagle is a shield. The majority of the gilt remains, being worn off in the raised areas of the eagle and around the rim. The shank is still with this one, but is bent slightly as there is a small push on the back of the button. This button was manufactured during the war years and has survived quite well. It would make a fine addition to your Union button collection.
