This is a Civil War era cap tin from Eley of London, England. The Eley company was formed by Charles and William Eley in the 1820's in London, England. They started producing percussion caps in 1837. When William was killed in an explosion in 1841 his three sons continued on with the business. The eldest son, William Thomas Eley, formed an alliance with Samuel Colt to produce skinned cartridges for his Colt revolvers. The tin is in very good, undamaged condition. The black japenned tin is made in segments. The original wafered cardboard liner is still intact. Inside the tin are about a dozen modern caps that will be shipped with the tin. These little tins make great additions to antique weapons displays.
