This is an excavated Confederate I button from the Civil War period. This two piece button is of coat size and has a lined old English I on the face. The back mark is blank. The face is perfect with absolutely no damage or flaws what so ever. The button has a beautifully even chocolate brown patina. The shank is still re[porting for duty, standing straight and tall! There is an example of this button in Alphaeus Albert's book "Record of American Uniform and Historical Buttons" on page 374, CS 177. This is the second button we picked up at the show in Denver back in May from a guy out of Missouri. He said this one came from Madison County, Missouri near the site of the Battle of Fredericktown. If you're into buttons this one will not disappoint!
