This is an excavated Confederate I button from the Civil War period. This button is of coat size and has a stippled Roman I on the face. The back mark is by HT&B Manchester. It was recovered near Winchester, Virginia, one of the most contested cities of the Civil War. This one has taken on a black patina. The face has a small dent just to the side of the I. The shank is missing, probably happened when the dent occurred on the face of the button. There is an exact example of this button in Alphaeus Albert's book "Record of American Uniform and Historical Buttons" on page 374, CS 171. Great addition to your excavated or button collection.
