US Model 1858 Bullseye Canteen
Item #: AA3657
This is a Model 1858 "Bullseye" canteen from the Civil War. This canteen has seven concentric rings stamped into each side of the canteen body. These were done in an attempt to help strengthen the canteen. It measures approximately 7 1/2" in diameter. There are no dents n either side of the canteen. Believe it or not this thing still holds water! All three sling guides are reporting for duty, the stopper is broke off in the spout. The original chain is missing in action. The pewter spout stands straight and is marked .J HALL ROHRMAN PHILAD. This manufacturer had contracts for canteens from 1863 to 1864. The absence of the contract date puts this one being made in 1863 or early 1864, before the requirement for the date. The surface of the canteen shows traces of the original bright color showing, mainly in the recessed areas of the rings. There are a few spots of light surface rust scattered around on one side of the canteen, the side side is more heavily rusted. The web sling and cover for this canteen are missing. Here's a chance to pick up a piece that every collection needs, maker marked and still capable of doing it's job!
