This is a percussion, half stock, heavy barreled sporting rifle from the mid 1800's time period. It has an overall length of 52", with a barrel length of 38". The exterior of the barrel has an out of the attic dark, almost black patina with light surface pitting along the length of the barrel. The bore gages out at .50 caliber and is dark with light surface rust. The barrel is not stamped anywhere on the exterior. The barrel has not been removed to inspect the underside for any stamps or markings. The octagon barrel is the front sight, but has a barrel type rear sight. The barrel is retained by a single escutcheon and three tang screws. The ramrod pipes are missing from the bottom of the barrel. The ramrod is no longer with this rifle. The lock is not maker marked, and has no engraving. The mechanics of the lock do not work, the hammer can not be cocked as it is frozen in place. The spur of the hammer is broken off. Curiously, this rifle does not have double triggers, just the ordinary trigger found on most long arms. All of the furniture on the gun is brass, and it all has the same black patina as the barrel. On the inside of the patch box cover the name LEWIS is stamped. The name Peter ? Lewis s found on a brass plate on the left side of the stock. There is also a starburst type plate on the left stock cheek rest that has the name HAWK EYE in the center. The left stock comb also has an very ornate spread winged eagle that runs from the top to the bottom of the stock. The stock has a crack that runs from one side of the forearm to the other. It seems to be quite deep, but the stock still has good integrity. There is a cheek rest on the left side of the stock. This is an honest, untouched example of the craftsmanship of Charles Raker of Bedford County, Pennsylvania and his mid 1800's target rifle.
