This is a sleeve insignia for a German Gefreiter worn during World War II. It is constructed of a dark green base of wool in the shape of an inverted triangle. Sewn onto the dark green cloth is a silver bullion inverted chevron. This insignia was worn on the soldier's left sleeve mid way between the elbow and shoulder. Historically in German armies, a Gefreiter was an experienced soldier who by virtue of seniority was exempted from more menial tasks. This Gefreiter insignia is in good condition, and looks to have never been sewn on a uniform. It would display well in a collection on it's own, or sewn onto a uniform.
