California Volunteers Medal for Spanish American War Service

This is the state medal for California veterans of the Spanish American War. This medal had no ribbon, just the medallion and the hanger with pin. The front of the hanger has the word CALIFORNIA within a rectangle with a bears head over the top and his paws on either end of the rectangle. The reverse of the hanger is stamped 5930. The front of the medal has two soldiers standing before a seated lady dressed in ancient Greek or Roman attire. She is presenting the nearer one a laurel branch. The reverse of the medal reads "THE PEOPLE OF CALIFORNIA/TO/FOR SERVICE IN THE/SPANISH AMERICAN WAR/1898 99. A space is provide for a soldier or sailors name to be engraved below the word TO. There were 6,000 of these medals presented awarded to California's Spanish American War veterans. 1400 were presented to the 1st California Infantry Regiment and Heavy Artillery Regiment returning home from the Philippines. The remainder were presented to other California regiments and volunteers. The initials of CVT have been scratched onto the back of the medal. This California medal for their Spanish American War veterans displays well, and will compliment any Span Am collection.
