This is a set of horse hobbles from the Civil War period. Hobbles were used at night to prevent the horse from wondering off while the trooper slept. The hobbles consist of two leather rings, or cuffs, attached to a piece of chain between them. The metal chain between the leather cuffs of this set of hobbles measures 26" when extended. This would have allowed the horse to still graze at night, but kept it from traveling a great distance while his rider slept. There were other forms of hobbles that prevented the horse from moving at all. The leather is pretty dry and he cuffs are not very flexible. There are numbers stamped into the leather, but they are a little hard to read. This set of hobbles displays well, and would really enhance a Cavalry display!
