This is a ring gauge for ammunition used by the US Navy's 18 Pounder siege guns used during the Civil War. These guns were found primarily in coastal fortifications, usually mounted on barbette carriages. In January of 1860 there were 61 forts and batteries that defended America's coastal cities. This ring gauge is made of iron and has a turned wooden handle. The ring measures 6" wide, 12" long and has an inside diameter of 5 1/4". The wooden handle has a US Navy mark stamped into it on one side. This is a pretty scarce piece, and would look great in your Civil War Naval collection.
