This is a Japanese Chochin hanging lantern from the late Edo period. The copper top and bottom have a beautiful, deep untouched patina. The lantern is 1 1/2" tall when collapsed and 12" tall when extended. These collapsible lanterns are very easy to use, simply compact the lantern, open the door on the top, insert a candle on the spike on the bottom plate, light the candle, extend the lantern and close the door. The paper is in very good condition, and has only one tiny hole that I could see. These usually have a chain that attaches to the handle, but this one is missing. This late Edo period Chochin hanging lantern would look great in your WWII Japanese collection.
