This is a 1/35th scale diorama of The Angel of Marye's Heights. The small figures are mounted on a wooden base that measures 5" wide and 3" long. The plastic figures are hand painted and depict Confederate Sergeant Richard R Kirkland of Company G, 2nd South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment, attending to a wounded Union Infantryman. He wears a gray frock coat and gray trousers. Over the uniform he has a cartridge box, canteen and cup, tops it off with a kepi. He is depicted kneeling by the wounded Union soldier, attempting to give what comfort and aid he could. Sgt Kirkland performed these acts of bravery and kindness on the field in front of the Confederate positions near the stone wall at the base of Marye's Heights in Fredericksburg, Virginia. During the fighting that occurred on 13 December, 1862, thousands of Union soldiers were killed or wounded near the stone wall. When the sun arose on the 14th, there were over 8000 wounded soldiers still in front of Sgt Kirkland's position. Showing no regard for his own safety, Kirkland began moving among the wounded, bringing them water, blankets and warm clothing to the casualties that had lain on the field all night. Neither side fired a shot as both sides watched in awe as Sgt Kirkland attended to every soldier, Confederate and Union, on his end of the battlefield. Later, at the Battle of Chickamauga, now Lieutenant Kirkland was shot and killed. A monument much like this small diorama, was erected in 1965 in front of the stonewall on the Fredericksburg Battlefield to pay tribute to Richard Rowland Kirkland, The Angel of Marye's Heights. This small diorama is well constructed and adds a little color to all displays.
