This is a chess set with a Civil War theme made by the Vanmark company in 2003. It was part of their "Commanding Images of the Civil War" series. The chess board measures 15 1/2" by 4" by 15 1/2". The board is set up to represent the United States where the majority of the Civil War occurred. The top is removable, allowing access to the individual storage compartments to the pieces. The outside of the case has a cherry finish and is supported by four pewter eagles. Two of the eagles have Confederate battle flags on a shield, the other two have the American flag on a shield. The Union pieces are placed on the north side of the board, the Confederate pieces on the south side of the board. Each piece measures between 2 1/2" and 4" tall, made of resin and is hand painted. The Union pieces use Union Infantrymen as pawns, log fortifications with a siege mortar for rooks, Generals Sheridan and Custer for knights, Generals Hancock and Sherman as bishops, the image of Columbia as the queen and General Grant as the king. The Confederate pieces are represented by hard fighting Army of Tennessee Infantry as pawns, (I made that part up!) log fortifications with siege mortars as rooks, two of the greatest Cavalrymen to ever sit a saddle, Generals Forrest and Stuart as knights, Generals Joe Johnston and Stonewall Jackson as bishops, the image of State's Rights as the queen and General Robert E. Lee as the king. Each piece has amazing detail, and has an aged bronze look. This will make a great Christmas gift for the collector that plays chess. It certainly gives some class to a war room!
