Model 1858 "Bullseye" Canteen Maker Marked
Item #: AA1285
This is a Model 1858 "Bullseye" canteen from the Civil War. This canteen has seven concentric rings stamped into each side of the canteen body. These were done in an attempt to help strengthen the canteen. It measures approximately 7 1/2" in diameter. There are dents on both sides of the canteen, a pretty large one near an upper sling guide on one side. believe it or not this thing still holds water! All three sling guides are reporting for duty, but the stopper, chain and pull are missing. The pewter spout stands straight and is marked C.H. & Co. PHILa, standing for Code Hopper & Company. This manufacturer had contracts for canteens from 1862 to 1864. The initials of JSH are also scratched into spout. Wonder how many soldiers are out there with those initials?! The surface of the canteens shows some original bright color showing, mainly in the recessed areas of the rings. There are few spots of light surface rust scattered around. Here's a chance to pick up a piece that every collection needs, maker marked and still capable of doing it's job! If only we could figure out who ol' JSH was!
