This is a sterling silver match safe manufactured by Mitchell Bosley & Company of Birmingham, England in the late 1800's. It measures 1 9/16" wide, 1 9/16" high and 5/16" deep. It has some elaborate engravings on both sides. The lid is hinged on the same side and the ring for a lanyard or chain. The inside lip of the safe has the hallmarks, and a couple are hard to make out now. Within a diamond is the letter S, within a circle the & symbol and I can't make the next letter, possibly L? The following three hallmarks are within a square or rectangle, an anchor, a lion and possibly the letter L. On the outside of the safe the letter CB are intertwined inside a shield. The reverse of the safe has a small push in it, but the safe still holds it's shape well. A built in striker is located on the bottom of the safe. This one displays well and would be correct for a British WWI display.
