This is an excavated eagle I cuff size button with applied silver wash from the Civil War period. The button is of a two piece design and is back marked SCOVILL CO WATERBURY and measures 15.00 mm. The majority of the silver wash remains on the button, but it still has a dark almost black patina. The shank is still reporting for duty, but is laying on it's side. This is still a nice piece to complete your button collection. This button was recovered on private property near the Wilson's Creek Battlefield. The Battle of Wilson's Creek was fought 10 August, 1861, near Springfield, Missouri. Approximately 5431 Union soldiers under the command of Brigadier General Nathaniel Lyon, met 12.175 Confederate soldiers under the command of Brigadier General Benjamin McCulloch and Major General Sterling Price at Wilson's Creek. This battle is considered to be a Confederate victory. Union casualties were approximately 285 killed, 873 wounded and 186 missing, while the Confederates suffered 277 killed and 945 wounded.
