This is a non excavated Pattern 1858 Cavalry cap badge used during the Civil War. This insignia was stamped out of sheet brass and measures 2 3/4" wide and 1 5/16" high. The brass has a mixed light chocolate and golden patina. It utilized four wires loops to attach to the hat, but two are missing. This one looks to be in unissued condition. Dragoon units and Cavalry units wore this same insignia, Dragoons wore it with the scabbard tips up, Cavalry with the scabbard tips down. In August, 1861 Dragoon and Mounted Rifle units were renamed Cavalry and all wore the insignia with the scabbard tips up. It displays great on it's own, and would look great on some headgear.
