This is a set of dug Virginia State Seal coat buttons. These buttons are two piece in design, one measures 22.56 mm and the other is 22.18 mm. The largest of the two is back marked "SCOVILLS & CO/WATERBURY" and the smaller is back marked "EXTRA QUALITY". The face of the buttons is the same as depicted in Albert's book as Virginia 24A on page 267. The face retains some of the applied gilt, the remainder having a deep chocolate patina. The back marks are clear and very legible, with the back of the buttons having a chocolate patina with a little scattered verdigris. The shanks are both present but are bent over to one side. These buttons were recovered from an 1864 winter camp site used by the Laurel Cavalry Brigade. Location of the find and the diggers name will be provided to the new owner!
