This is a 1/6 plate tintype of a Union soldier during the American Civil War. The image appears to have been taken in a studio. It has been placed inside a cardboard "frame" and the back of the image is concealed, so I don't know if there is a back mark or not. The left side of the cardboard is torn in two places, bottom left corner and about two thirds of the way up the left side of the image. There are small cracks in the image, but when viewed straight on they are not visible. This stalwart young man is dressed in a Hardee hat complete with Infantry horn and hat cord. He is wearing a nine button jacket with piping on the sleeve cuffs and regulation trousers. He is wearing a cartridge box with Eagle breast plate, US waist belt with plate, cap box and bayonet. He is holding what appears to be a Model 1841 rifle with the Model 1855 Saber bayonet attached. I believe the rifle is a studio prop, as the soldier still has his bayonet on his belt. The image is clear and could easily be displayed without the cardboard frame. A nice image of a young American soldier off to war to fight for his country.
