This is an excavated lead time fuze for a Hotchkiss case shot shell recovered on private property in Henrico County, Virginia, near the site of the Battle of Chaffin's Farm that took place on 29-30 September, 1864. This is considered to be one of the battles from the siege of Petersburg. 26,600 Union soldiers from two Union Corps under the commands of Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant and Major General Benjamin F. Butler fought 14,500 Confederate soldiers under the command of General Robert E. Lee and Lieutenant General Richard S. Ewell during this two day battle. Grant was trying to pull Lee's Confederates out of Richmond with a dual offensive. The result of the battle was a Union victory. Casualties reported by the Union were 391 killed, 2317 wounded and 649 captured or missing, while Confederate losses were 250 killed, 1250 wounded and 500 captured or missing. This excavated time fuze will make the perfect piece for the beginning Civil War collector.
