This is a US Model 1873 Bayonet designed for the Model 1873 Springfield "Trapdoor" rifle. These bayonets were used with the different variants of the Trapdoor rifle from 1873 through 1892 with the US Army. Some state and militia units were still using these rifle and bayonet combinations through the Spanish American and Philippine American wars. This model of bayonet was the last socket type bayonet to be used by the US military. The bayonet has a blade length of 18" and a socket length of 3". The bayonet retains over 90% of the original bluing on the socket, shank, blade and along the back edge and flutes. There is no pitting on the blade, shank or socket. The US stamp is still very visible. The scabbard also retains over 90% of the original bluing, and has no pitting on surface. The leather frog is still present. The brass disk that provides the pivot point for the belt attachment is stamped US, so this is not a state militia of National Guard bayonet. This example of the Model 1873 bayonet will go well with your Indian Wars, Spanish American or Philippine Insurrection collection.
