This is a Pattern 1885 scabbard frog for the Trapdoor rifle bayonet. It was adopted by the Ordnance Board as a solution for carrying the Model 1873 bayonet on the Mills cartridge belt. It was referred to by the Ordnance Department reports as "frog with hook attachment type for the Mills belt. The majority of this type frog were manufactured during the Spanish American War, with over 100,000 being produced at the Rock Island Arsenal between 1897 and 1898. The leather part of the frog that engages the scabbard is missing, leaving only the brass "hanger". The brass has taken on a nice chocolate patina. There are no makers marks stamped on the reverse of the hanger. It does have the US rosette, indicating it was issued to the regular Army and not a National Guard unit. It displays well on it's own, but could could be repaired if you wanted.
