This is a rare Allen & Wheelock brass framed side hammer .38 caliber percussion rifle. The Allen & Wheelock firm manufactured weapons out of Worcester, Massachusetts from 1856 through 1865. This rifle is rare due to the fact it has a brass frame, not very common for that time period. This side hammer rifle measures 47 1/2" overall, with a barrel length of 31 1/8". The heavy octagon barrel has a nice even plum patina with a smooth non pitted exterior. The bore is dark, but is not pitted and shows good rifling. On the left barrel flat at the breech is the only stamp or marking on the weapon, a very faint REMINGTON stamp, with just the REMIN still visible. A German silver blade type front sight has been dove tailed into the barrel one inch back from the muzzle. The rear sight is broken. The frame and forehand are both made of brass. The frame is 6" in length and very ornately scroll engraved. The forehand is plain. While the frame is unmarked, it is unique to other Allen variants that still survive. The mechanics of the weapon function normally, with the hammer locking in the half and full cock positions. The scroll engraving carries over onto the brass trigger guard. The stock is in very good condition with no cracks or wood loss. The dark appearance of the wood contrasts perfectly with the mustard colored patina of the brass. A crescent shaped brass butt plate and brass patch box complete the stock. The original brass tipped wooden ramrod is still with the gun. Here's a chance to own a rare firearm made by Allen & Wheelock from the mid 1800's.
