This is a framed Union Military Scrip note issued for services rendered during the Price raid of 1864 or the Indian Expedition under General Curtis in July and August of 1864. These notes were the result of the state of Kansas submitting a petition to the US government for damages incurred during the Civil War. The petition cited two specific incidents, the Confederate excursion known as "Price's Raid" in the fall of 1864 and the Indian Expedition under General Samuel Curtis in July and August of 1864. The US government agreed to pay for damages and services provided during the two incidents, and did so by issuing banknotes titled Union Military Scrip to the claimants. The Scrip note has a serial number, dollar amount, payee's name and reason for the payment written in by hand. This note is for services rendered during the Indian Expedition, and is written for seventeen dollars. It has the printed date of June 1st, 1867 and shows Topeka before the date. This is a very interesting document that originated after the Civil War, to pay for services rendered during the Civil War. This scrip note will fit into your currency or document collection quite well.
