This is a US post Vietnam era M1 helmet and liner. The helmet has a visible heat stamp of 1223F, a late WWII McCord manufactured shell. This one has multiple coats of paint, but the exterior is the darker WWII shade of green. The inside also shows multiple coats of paint. The exterior has a light sand texture applied to it. The helmet shell has no dents. The ream seam stainless steel band around the rim retains all of the original paint. The chin strap bails are swivel. There is white number 55 stenciled across the front of the shell, it's possible this one may have been at the jump school at Ft Benning at one time. The chin straps are still the WWII sewn on type. The liner is from the post WWII era, and is stamped US/19. The liner still has had the paint stripped off, just a small section remains along the right right and along the back of the liner. The liner suspension is complete, but the nape strap and sweatband is missing. The suspension cloth is cotton and correct for the Vietnam period. The DSA stamp on the suspension is not legible. The Mitchell reversible cover is dated 1974. The name GOLDSBERG is hand written on then desert side of the camo cover. This is an example of an M1 combat helmet from WWII that continued on to see service through the Vietnam era, married to a Vietnam era liner and cover. These old steel pots were issued all the way into the 1980's, when it was replaced by the Kevlar helmet.
