Five Piece Spanish American War Pinback Set

This is a five piece set of Spanish American War pinbacks. The set consists of two pinbacks of the 2nd Nebraska Volunteer Infantry Regiment, a small pinback of the US war ship Newark, one of the US war ship Dolphin and a cigarette advertisement from the Sweet Caporal Tobacco Company. The 2nd Nebraska badges were manufactured by the Whitehead & Hoag Company of Newark, New jersey. Both badges show discoloration on the face, but are still very legible. The 2nd Nebraska mustered into service in May, 1898 at Lincoln, Nebraska. The regiment consisted of 46 officer and 975 enlisted men. This regiment never left the United States, training at Camp Thomas on the Civil War Chickamauga Battlefield before being transferred to Omaha, Nebraska. The regiment mustered out of service on 2 September, 1898. The US warship Newark was commissioned on 2 February, 1891 as a United States Navy protected cruiser. During the Spanish American war the Newark was part of the blockade of Cuba. This warship bombarded the port of Manzanillo on 12 August, 1898 and accepted it's surrender the following day. The Newark returned to New York on 26 November, 1898. This small pinback was made by Whitehead & Hoag. The US war ship Dolphin was commissioned on 8 December, 1885 as a United States Navy gunboat/dispatch vessel. During the Spanish American war the Dolphin was part of the blockade of Cuba. This war ship provided fire support for the 1st Marine Battalion at the Battle of Cuzco Well in Guantanamo, Cuba. The Dolphin arrived in Norfolk, Virginia on 2 July, 1898. This small pinback was made by Whitehead & Hoag as well. A small rectangular celluloid with the flag of Cuba on the front completes the set. It is marked on the reverse, "PAT APPD FOR/CBW/SWEET CAPORAL/CIGARETTE". This brand of cigarette was manufactured by the Kinney Brothers Tobacco Company. They promoted the brand through use of collectible trading cards and items such as this Cuban flag. This is a small set of memorabilia from the Spanish American war that displays well.
