This is a cabinet card image of an unknown member of the New York "Old Guard" circa 1880's-1900. The visible image measures 3 15/16" wide by 5 9/16" tall. It is housed on a cardboard backer that measures 4 1/4" wide by 6 1/2" tall. The corners of the backer are square with a slight border on the top and both sides. The bottom has a larger border with the studio name and physical location in gold leaf lettering. The condition of the backer is very good. It has two small holes in the top and bottom, looks like it was stapled onto something at one time. There is no damage to the image at all. The image shows an unidentified member of the Old Guard that looks to be in his 30's or 40's. It is a bust image against a plain back drop. He is wearing a double breasted jacket with officer's Model 1872 shoulder knots, standing collar with a laurel wreath embroidered on it, and a double row of OG buttons. His jacket appears to have stripes on both sleeves from the elbow down as far as can be seen. Pinned to the front of his jacket, this officer displays five medals, the center one being a GAR membership badge. I suspect the remainder are GAR reunion badges and New York state medals. He is wearing a "pill box" style cap popular during that time period. Sewn onto the front of the cap are the Old Guard letters of OG on a circular backing. An officers band is sewn around the bottom of the cap. This dashing gentleman sports a handle bar mustache that is fantastic. The studio name at the bottom of the backer is Anderson, located at 785 Broadway, New York City. The studio's hallmark is in gold leaf on the back of the backer. The image is very clear, displays well and will compliment any late 1800's image collection.
