This is a percussion, half stock, heavy barreled match rifle from the mid 1800's time period. It has an overall length of 50", with a barrel length of 33 3/4". The exterior of the barrel has smooth, non pitted surface, with a steel gray appearance mixed with scattered plum patina . The bore gages out at .50 caliber and is turning dark with light surface rust. The barrel is stamped A.P. WOOD on the end of the barrel for Amos P. Wood of North Hamden, New York. The American Gun Makers text shows him in business as a maker of percussion match and hunting rifles. The octagon barrel is fitted with a blade front sight, rear buckhorn style sight 7" ahead of the breech plug and a flip up tangent sight mounted on the wrist of the stock. The lock plate is stamped with the name of JAS. GOLCHER/PHILADA, listed as being a lock maker. The barrel is retained by a single escutcheon and one tang screw. The ramrod pipes are secured to the bottom of the barrel. The wooden ramrod is cupped on one end, but has no brass tip. The mechanics of the lock work, but sometimes the hammer does not release and strike the nipple, stopping at the half cock position. The double triggers work perfectly. The lock and hammer have some simple engraving applied to each piece. The butt plate, trigger guard, nose cap and patch box are brass pieces. The escutcheon plate is made of German silver. The stock is in very good condition, one small crack that runs from the lock screw on the left side of the stock to the barrel, approximately 1" in length and shallow. A cheek rest has been fashioned on the left side of the stock. The wrist area has some very fine checker work that is still very crisp. This is a very nice example of mid 1800's craftsmanship used in the making of an early percussion match rifle by Amos P. Wood.
