The Ancient & Honorable Artillery Company of Boston, Massachusetts is the oldest chartered military organization in North America, the 3rd oldest in the world. It was charted in 1638 as a volunteer militia company to train officers enrolled in the militia across Massachusetts. Many of the original members of the AHAC had been members of the Honourable Artillery Company of London. The Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Boston is still active today, with approximately 550 members. This badge is two piece, with a hanger and a shield shaped badge with a knight depicted on the front. The badge is 2 1/4" tall, with the hanger being 1 1/2" wide. The hanger is fashioned to represent a banner, with a stippled background and the letters A. & H.A.Co. in black enamel, with the year 1638 in black enamel below it over crossed cannons. Suspended below the hanger is a a shield type badge, with crossed spontoons projecting from the top and bottom of the shield. In the center of the shield at the top is the Massachusetts Minuteman's drawn sword. In the center of the shield is a brass knight with halberd and sheathed sword. This medal is in overall very good condition. There is no makers mark on the badge, just the engraved number 177. I believe this is an award to a member of the A & H A Co., but I have not been able to find another like it. It displays well, and will enhance any Ancient & Honorable Artillery Company collection.
