This is a percussion, half stock, heavy barreled sporting rifle from the mid 1800's time period. It has an overall length of 54 1/4", with a barrel length of 38 5/8". The exterior of the barrel has an out of the attic dark, almost black patina with light surface pitting along the length of the barrel. The bore gages out at .40 caliber and is turning dark with light surface rust. The barrel is not stamped anywhere on the exterior. The barrel has not been removed to inspect the underside for an stamps or markings. The octagon barrel is fitted with a brass blade front sight and a fixed buckhorn style rear sight. The barrel is retained by a single escutcheon and two tang screws. The ramrod pipes are secured to the bottom of the barrel. The ramrod is no longer with this rifle. The lock is not maker marked, but does have some engraving toe the rear. A hunter is engraved on the rear of the lock, set in the woods. The mechanics of the lock do not work, the hammer will not hold in the cocked position. There is a small piece of iron wire retaining the front portion of the lock to the stock. The double triggers appear to work perfectly. The butt plate and trigger guard are brass and have an orange/black patina. The nose cap is made of pewter, with several letters scratched into it. The stock is in good condition, and has no cracks or major wood loss. There is a cheek rest on the left side of the stock. This is a nice example of mid 1800's craftsmanship used in the making of an early target rifle.
