This is a percussion, brass framed, hooked breeched, heavy barreled target rifle from the mid 1800's time period. It has an overall length of 42 1/2", with a barrel length of 26". The exterior of the barrel has a smooth, non pitted surface, with a mix of original bluing and plum patina. The bore gages out at .43 caliber and is turning dark with light surface rust. The barrel is not stamped or marked in any way. The octagon barrel is fitted with an iron blade front sight and provisions for a removable rear sight. The barrel is retained by a hook style breech plug and a single iron pin that passes through the brass frame and barrel. The idea behind the hook breech system was to allow for quick and easy removal of the barrel for maintenance and cleaning. The single brass ramrod pipe is secured to the bottom of the barrel. A simple wooden ramrod accompanies the rifle. The brass frame of the rifle includes the fore stock normally made of wood. The brass had a gold gilt applied, of which over 70% still remains. The exposed brass has attained a light chocolate with an orange tint patina. The mechanics of the rifle operate normally, holding at the half and full cock positions. Unlike most sporting rifles of the time, this one does not have double triggers. The butt plate, patch box and trigger guard are all brass and have a patina matching the frame. On the left side of the stock is a simple patch box, most likely used to store extra caps. The stock shows signs of use, but there are cracks or breaks present. It has been suggested that this gun was made by an unknown gunsmith from the Winchester, Virginia area as a trials sharpshooter rifle for the Confederate government during the Civil War period. I have no documentation to support that, only word of mouth from the previous owner. The rifle comes in a wooden case that includes the rifle, removable rear sight, ramrod and cleaning rod. This is a rare brass framed sporting rifle with possible connections to the Civil War period, and would be a nice addition to your 1800's sporting rifle collection.
