This is a pair of private purchase officers boots worn during World War I. They were manufactured by the Boyden Shoe Company of Newark, New Jersey. The company opened their doors in 1914, and suffered a huge loss in December, 1915 from a fire. These boots are made of quality brown leather that remain very supple with no crazing. There is the normal creasing from age and wear. The heels and soles show wear, but are complete and intact. The left boot has a problem with stitching on the back side. The upper part of the boot is sewn together in the back and a strip of leather covers the stitching. That piece of leather is missing, and all the stitching is broken. I'm pretty sure that is an easy repair for any competent shoe repair shop. The right boot has a small hole at the very bottom of the upper section, near the ankle. The boots are 16" tall from the heel to the back of the boot. They are 11 1/4" in length and have 1" stacked heels. Each boot has two striped cloth pull straps sewn on the inside. The right boot has the company logo and EST to the left of it and 1914 on the right side of it. Below the logo is the company name embossed in gold, "The BOYDEN Shoe", below that NEWARK, N.J. U.S.A. and finally REG. U.S. PAT. OFF. These would look fantastic on a uniformed mannequin.
