This is an import Model 1850 Foot Officers sword from the Civil War. The sword measures 39 1/4" overall, with a 33 1/4" blade that measures 1 3/16" wide at the hilt. The blade has a stopped fuller that runs 30 1/2" long. There are several nicks and gouges along the edge, along with some areas of the blade that look to have been exposed to acid. The blade has a dark, black patina to it. There are no visible etching or engraving anywhere on the blade. The obverse and reverse ricassos are blank, no maker marks, inspector stamps or anything else, but I believe this is a German made blade. The leather washer has been missing for quite some time now. The brass hilt has an aged, deep chocolate patina. The knuckle bow is a little loose at the pommel, causing a little deflection in the guard. The pommel cap is a two piece design and is also just a tick loose. The wooden grip is still covered in the original leather wrap, and it shows some honest wear from use. The double strand wire is still very tight to the grip. This Model 1850 foot officers sword would have had a leather scabbard, but it isn't around any more. This is a good example of an imported Model 1850 Foot Officer's sword in untouched condition.
