This is a Civil War veterans medal awarded by the state of Ohio. The state of Ohio authorized Tiffany & Company of New York to provide 20,000 medals to recognize the soldiers from Ohio who reenlisted under War Department General Order Number 191, which called for "Veteran Volunteers". These were soldiers who had completed their original tour of duty, then reenlisted for duty as a veteran volunteer. The front of the medal has Miss Liberty holding a pike with with liberty cap placing a laurel wreath on a soldier's head. The soldier holds his rifle in his left hand and his kepi in his right. The years 1861-1865 are stamped at the bottom of the medal. The reverse of the medal has both stamped and engraved writing on it. It reads THE/STATE OF OHIO/TO/J.S. CHAPIN/VETERAN/CO. M 3rd REGt./OHIO VOLUNTEER/CAV. John S. Chapin was 22 years old when he enlisted as a Sergeant on 8 September, 1861. He mustered into Company M, 3rd Ohio Cavalry Regiment the same day. Chapin was promoted twice, to Quartermaster Sergeant nd then to company First Sergeant on 2 December, 1864. 1SG Chapin mustered out of the Union Army on 4 August, 1865 at Edgefield, Tennessee. These medals were mailed out to the veterans in the summer of 1866. This medal was originally covered in verdigris, but is cleaning up nicely. I will post new pictures when the cleaning process is over. The original red, white and blue ribbon is still with the medal. It is damaged by the verdigris on one side, but the side that is displayed is still in good condition. This one will make a nice addition to any Ohio Civil War collection.
