This is a set of five Women's Relief Corps convention ribbons from the state of Montana. The Grand Army of the Republic was a veterans organization that was formed by Benjamin Stephenson on 6 April, 1866. It was composed of Union veterans of the American Civil War. In the beginning the GAR was available as a way for the veterans to meet and stay in contact with each other after the war ended. They soon grew into one of the most powerful political organizations of their time. Organizations such as the Sons of Veterans, Daughters of the GAR, Women's Relief Corps, Ladies of the GAR and the National Association of Ex-Prisoners of War were started as auxiliaries to the GAR as the older veterans began to die off. The 5 different convention ribbons for the Montana Women's Relief Corps in this group are in good condition. All of the ribbons are white with black and white images and either black or blue ink lettering. The oldest is from the 18th annual convention held in Butte, Montana May 4,5,6, 1911. An oval depiction of the town of Butte is in the center of the ribbon with the words "The Richest Hill on Earth" below the image. The Twenty ninth annual convention was held on June 20, 21 and 22, 1922 in Kalispell, Montana. Another oval in the center of the ribbon, this one of the GAR Montana Department commander. The ink on this one is blue. The third is from the Thirty Third annual convention held June 14, 15 and 16, 1926 in Missoula, Montana. A black and white image of Montana's Department Commander, R. L. Cleveland is in the rectangle in the center of the ribbon. The fourth ribbons is from the thirty fourth annual convention held 20, 21, 22 June, 1927 in Helena, Montana. A black and white image of the Montana Department commander, Jacob Ohls, is center in the center of the ribbon. The fifth ribbon is foe the Headquarters Department of Montana WRC for the convention held in Washington D.C. in 1915. These are some pretty rare pieces, most anything from Montana is! They will compliment any GAR or WRC collection.
