This is a lapel pin of Major General Nelson Miles from the Spanish American War period. Miles had a remarkable military career that spanned the Civil War, Indian Wars and the Spanish American War period. While he was a gifted and courageous leader, Nelson Miles was also a very controversial man. His ambition set him at odds with his peers and superiors the majority of his career. That did not keep him from reaching the Army's top command position in 1895, being named the General in Chief of the Army. During the Spanish American War Major General Nelson Miles commanded the US military expedition to Puerto Rico. Even though this campaign was short, it was very successful. However, Miles' success was overshadowed by his public quarrel with the Secretary of War. This colored pin is 7/8" across and remains in very good condition. The pin is manufactured by Whitehead & Hoag of Newark, New Jersey. It has a paper label with the Whitehead & Hoag markings. This will display well on it's own, or will add a small splash of color to you Spanish American War collection.
