The United Spanish War Veterans organization was the result of three large Span-Am veterans groups merging in 1904. It's members were veterans of the Spanish American War, Philippine American War and the China Relief Expedition. This USWV medal is a complimentary badge for veterans attending the 8th National Encampment held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 1911. The badge is 3 1/2" tall, with the hanger being 1 3/4" wide. The hanger is made up of crossed rifles, crossed sabers and an 1889 campaign hat. A banner with the words UNITED SPANISH WAR VETERANS lays over the rifles and sabers, with the letters USA below the banner. Suspended below the hanger is a red and yellow ribbon with the word COMPLIMENTARY and the year 1911 in gold printed on it. Suspended from the ribbon is the United Spanish War Veterans emblem of a cross with a disc centered in the middle. The ribbon is pretty tired, being frayed and almost broken in the middle. The back of the medal is stamped with the maker mark of JOS. MAYER & BROS. SEATTLE WASH in an arc over the word MAKER. While this one has a problem with the ribbon, it's still not one you run across everyday.
