This is a medallion for the cornerstone laying of Memorial Hall in Topeka, Kansas. The silver washed medallion has a likeness of the future Memorial Hall in the center, with laurel branches coming from the bottom and around the edges of the medal. Along the perimeter of the medal are the symbols for the Grand Army of the Republic, the Women's Relief Corps, Sons of Veterans and Sons of Union Veterans, with a likeness of P.H. Coney at the bottom. Embossed above the building is "OFFICIAL MEDAL/CORNER STONE LAYING", and the date SEPTEMBER 27th, 1911 below the building. Memorial Hall was erected in recognition of Kansas's soldiers and sailors who served during the Civil War. On the reverse of the coin is the state seal of Kansas, with a scroll surrounding it bearing the dates 1861 and 1911. Written on a military style shield are the words, "ERECTED/BY THE/STATE OF KANSAS/IN MEMORY OF THE UNION/SOLDIERS AND SAILORS/OF THE WAR OF THE/REBELLION/1861-1865." This is another nice piece for your Kansas GAR collection.
