This is a Grand Army of the Republic celluloid drop from the early 1900's. This drop would have been suspended from a ribbon, but unfortunately the ribbon for this one is long gone. The celluloid measures 1 3/4" across and is two sided. One side has the 6th Corps insignia in blue, signifying the 3rd Division. Imposed over the corps emblem are crossed cannons, likely representing the artillery supporting the 3rd Division. On the opposite side is an image of a Union Brigadier General. I haven't been able to determine who he is yet, but I don't think he commanded the 3rd Division of the 6th Corps. The 6th Corps was organized on 18 May, 1862, with Major General William B. Franklin appointed as corps commander. After the Battle of Antietam, Major General Darius Couch's division of the IV Corps was reassigned to become the 3rd Division of the 6th Corps. The 6th Corps would become one of the hardest fought units in the Army of the Potomac. This 6th Corps celluloid is in good condition, showing a little yellow from age, but without any damage. Even without the ribbon it will still make a nice addition to your GAR collection.
