This is a British Midshipmen's lion head pommel dirk from the Civil War period. The dirk has an overall length of 19 1/2", with a blade length of 14 5/8". The tapered blade is 1 1/16 wide at the hilt, with the spine being 3/16" wide at the hilt. The blade has a dull steel gray patina, with some traces of the etchings visible on either side. The simple brass cross guard has a side plate on the obverse side with a wreath surrounding a crown and anchor. The reverse side of the guard has a small catch to secure the dirk in the scabbard, but it is damaged and does not function. The cross guard is loose on the blade. A brass ferrule is at the front of the grip, with a brass back strap turning into a lions head at the pommel. The back strap has designs that make it appear to be part of the lion's mane. The grip is wrapped in shark skin and secured with copper wire. The wrap is almost 100 % intact, with just a small section missing on the reverse side at the ferrule. There is a small brass ring in the lion's mouth. The black leather scabbard is in good condition. It has a single top brass mount and a brass drag. The top mount has two rings to attach the scabbard to belt drops. The mount is loose and moves upward on the leather when the dirk is removed from the scabbard. The drag is secure, and has a couple of dents towards the bottom. There is some paperwork that comes with this dirk showing a loose identification to a Confederate Naval officer that was killed at the Battle of Mobile Bay.
