This is a Mexican Cavalry saber made by an unknown manufacturer circa 1890 - 1910. The sword measures 40 3/4" overall, with a blade length of 35 3/4". The blade is curved with a flat spine and measures 1 3/8" wide at the guard. It is a single edged blade with a stopped fuller that measures 22 3/4". It also has an enormous 3" ricasso, unfortunately without any markings or stamps. The edge of the blade is free of nicks or dings. The blade has a bright steel patina with a couple of small age spots. It has quite a bit of shine to it, and it appears to have been cleaned in the not so distant past. The blade has never been sharpened. The iron hilt has a darker patina than the blade, being more of a steel gray with more aged spots showing. The guard is similar in appearance to a British Pattern 1853 Cavalry saber. There is no leather washer on the front side of the guard. The blade is still very tight on the grip. The wooden grip is covered with brown leather, and shows some wear from use. The single strand brass wire is broken and loose on the grip. There is no pommel cap, the knuckle bow terminates at the back of the grip, and the tang has been peened there. A brass ferrule is between the rear of the grip and the knuckle bow. The peen is unmolested. The grip. guard and blade are all very tight, and there is no deflection when handled. The scabbard is made of black leather and has no throat and two small iron suspension rings. The scabbard is in very good condition, and appears to be original to the sword. This is some slight shrinkage, so when the sword is fully sheathed the tip extends through the scabbard about 1/4". Overall this is a very good example of a no frills cavalry saber that very likely could have seen use during the Mexican Revolution that took place during 1910 through 1920. This would look right at home next to a photo of Poncho Villa or Zapata!
