These notes were the result of the state of Kansas submitting a petition to the US government for damages incurred during the Civil War. The petition cited two specific incidents, the Confederate excursion known as "Price's Raid" in the fall of 1864 and the Indian Expedition under General Samuel Curtis in July and August of 1864. The US government agreed to pay for damages and services provided during the two incidents, and did so by issuing banknotes titled Union Military Scrip to the claimants. There are three sheets containing three scrip notes per sheet. The sheets of paper measure 13 1/2" wide and 13 1/4" tall. Each note has a serial number, dollar amount, payee's name an reason for the payment written in by hand. All nine of these notes is for services rendered during the Indian Expedition, and range in payment from 22 dollars down to sixteen dollars. They all have the printed date of June 1st, 1867 and show Topeka before the date. These are very interesting documents originated after the Civil War, to pay for services rendered during the Civil War. These will fit into your currency or document collection.
