This is a cast iron flag stand made for the Women's Relief Corps. The WRC was a women's organization that was founded as an auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic in 1883. It was designed to assist the GAR, promote and help run Memorial Day, petition the government for nurses pensions and promote patriotic education. This flag stand measures 8 1/4" wide and is 3 1/4" tall. It is embossed with AUXILIARY to the GRAND ARMY of the REPUBLIC. On the top a Maltese cross is embossed, and contained with the arms are WRC and 1883. The bottom has a patent date of 22 June, 1924. This small flag stand would look good in a GAR collection with some WRC pieces mingled in.
