This is an artillery sponge bucket from the Civil War period. It is constructed of cylindrical sheet iron with a top and bottom that overlaps the body and is riveted in place. This one measures 7 7/8" in diameter and stands 9" tall. The top has a 5 3/8" diameter hole that is covered by a wooden lid. The lid is secured by a U shaped iron hook riveted to the lid that is connected to a chain attached to the carrying handle. The handle is made of iron that is attached to the bucket by two hooks. A swivel connected by two chains links and a toggle are attached to the top of the handle that allowed the bucket to hang under the limber or cannon carriage. The bucket carried water, used to wet the sponge head when washing out the cannon tube. This artillery sponge bucket has survived well. It retains much of the original finish. There are some areas of rust, but no holes or weak spots. There is one small dent on the side of the bucket. If you have an artillery implement collection this piece should be in it!
