This is a powder flask made from a cow horn from the early 1800's. The horn measures 10 1/2" in length, 2 1/2" across the butte plug and 1/2" across the spout. The horn has aged nicely and shows no cracks or splits. The butte plug is held secure with iron pins. What ever it was that was used to attach the rawhide suspension strap to is missing from the butte plug, along with the strap. The spout plug is broken off in the spout. The size of this one makes me think this one was carried for use with a long rifle. There are a couple of designs carved into the horn. One is a six petal flower design within a circle. A five point star within a circle has also been carved into the horn. What appears to be the letters X and A are carved inside an elaborate border next to the other two symbols. It is possible that this could have been used by the native Americans of East Tennessee.
